LOBSTER LINGO

First Slack [furst slak]
Noun

1. The first slack tide after dawn on the first day of mini-season. This is the prime time to dive for lobsters because it is the first legal dive without a current since the end of regular season. This means that the bugs are plentiful and you don't have to waste your energy fighting the current. First slack varies between high tide and low tide and time of day depending on the year.




Example: The viz was awesome during first slack this year. You could spot bugs from a mile away.

LOBSTER LINGO

Bag Man [bag man]
- Noun
Inflected form: Bag, Bagging, Bagged

1. A snorkeler who follows a diver around while holding a lobster catch bag so the diver doesn't have to swim with it. The bag man's job is to keep an eye on the diver and descend to meet the diver with the bag when the diver has caught a lobster.


Example: My back is completely burned because I spent the day bagging for my friend.

Tickle Stick [ti-kəl stik]
- Noun

1. A long skinny rod typically made of metal or fiberglass used to coax lobsters out from underneath rocks, ledges and holes. A lobsterman's main weapon in the fight against the bugs.


Example: I dropped my tickle stick when the lobster almost escaped from my net.

Noun

1. An floating air compressor used by lame amateur divers that supplies them with air while underwater. An alternative to using a scuba tank, in which the diver is attached to a hose that feeds to the surface where a gas powered motor provides a continuous supply or air.

2. A water pipe used to smoke flavored tobacco known as shisha.

1. Pulling a diver behind the boat in an effort to spot a lobster hideout. Typically accomplished by the diver holding onto a rope similar to a water skier. When a lobster is spotted the diver drops off the line and stay on top of him while the boat circles around for the kill.

Inflected form: Salty, Saltiest, Saltier

1. A level of value that can be used to describe an individual or group's experience and general worth while on a mini-season (or other nautical) trip. While tenure and experience can effect ones saltiness, it is derived by a much larger group of factors.

Synonyms: scurvyness


Example: The level of Josh's saltiness decreased significantly when he threw a lobster tail in the water instead of its head.

- noun

1. An acronym that stands for "Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission," which is Florida's fish and wildlife law enforcement agency. During mini season they are in charge of making sure no on is boating dirty.

Synonyms: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Po-Po, 5-0.


Example: I'm nor sure why the FWC pulled us over, our harpoon is totally legal.

Keeper [kee-per]
- noun

1. A lobster that is large enough to take home and turn into dinner without risking the FWC sending you to the clinker. In Florida a keeper is a lobster with a minimum 3" carapace.

2. A girl hot enough, and only mildly annoying enough, to actually consider making your wife.

Synonyms: Legal Lobster, Dream Girl.













Example: Your goal this year is catch at least one keeper, so that you don't embarrass yourself again.

- noun

1. Half knife, half wrench, entirely awesome. The most important tool that a lobsterman can possibly own. Don’t be caught hunting bugs without one.

Synonyms: Its a knifewrench people, it doesn't need any other name, it's like Cher or Madonna.


Example: Tickle stick? Check. Lobster net? Check. Knifewrench? Check. Let’s kill us some bugs.

noun

1. A tasty bottom feeding crustacean of the family Palinuridae. Recognizable by their large antenna, spiny shell, and small front pincers. Typically found cowardly hiding in holes and under rocks.

Synonyms: Spiny Lobster, Florida Lobster.
